Driver, 24, in critical condition after Oxford Road crash

A man has been left seriously ill in hospital after a car and private hire car collided outside Manchester University.

According to police, a red Lexus car and silver Toyota Avensis collided head-on outside the Oxford Road campus.

The 24-year-old driver of the Lexus, which overturned in the smash, is being treated at the Manchester Royal Infirmary where his condition has been described as serious.

The 48-year-old driver of the taxi suffered fractured ribs. Neither vehicle was believed to be carrying any passengers.

Emergency services raced to the crash just after 10.30am outside the university’s Kilburn building.

Oxford Road was closed between Brunswick Street and Booth Street East for a number of hours but has now reopened.

PC Pete Cunningham, from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We are investigating the circumstances leading up to this collision and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to call us as soon as possible.”
