Nearby homes were damaged by the ensuing fireball and five parked cars near the accident were also set alight.

The nature of the accident meant that the two men could not be immediately identified.

“We are working with the coroner to identify the two people who died following a road traffic collision in Boothstown on February 7,” said a Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman.

“Formal identification has not yet been carried out so GMP is not in a position to confirm the identities of the two people at this stage.”

Police are appealing to witnesses to come forward with any information.
