Flash floods close three lanes of clockwise M60, and affects Stockport and Tameside roads

Floods brought traffic to a standstill in areas of Greater Manchester.

All three lanes of the clockwise carriageway of the M60 were closed around Stockport following sudden heavy rain.

Traffic slowed to a crawl as cars were restricted to using the hard shoulder on junction 27 (Portwood roundabout) and junction one (Stockport pyramid).

In addition to this, Ashton Road in Denton was closed near junction one of the M67.

Other roads around Stockport and Tameside reported flooding although they weren't closed.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were called to one flooded property on Lowndes Lane in Offerton, Stockport, over fears that water may reach electricity cables.

A Met Office forecaster said more rain was on its way.

“We've had very localised heavy rainfall. It's happened pretty much across the country. Most of the affected areas have been further south but there has been a band of rain that's moved across the north west and in particular Manchester, with thundery showers.”
