Residents demand action over speed restrictions after latest Marsden crash

Residents in Marsden want tougher speed restrictions in order to prevent injuries after a driver was injured in a crash yesterday.

Rescue teams rushed to help the man, who was trapped for several minutes after his car flipped over after hitting a parked car.

He was later taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary but was not thought to be badly hurt.

Mount Road runs from Fall Lane up the hill past Marsden Cricket Club and Marsden Golf Club to join the A62 Manchester Road above the village.

The lower half of the road has a 30mph limit but the upper stretch is derestricted.

Suzy Daly, who lives with her three children, said: “People living here are very concerned and we want some kind of speed reduction system on this road.

“Over the past 12 months there have been a number of crashes. One of them wrote off two vehicles and the one yesterday also saw two cars badly damaged.

“We feel the issue is getting worse and we would like the authorities to look at other ways of reducing speed, such as bringing in a 20mph zone as they have elsewhere.”

Kirklees Council has introduced 20mph zones in several villages, including Honley, Almondbury and Meltham.

A spokesman said: “Budget constraints mean that traffic calming measures have to be prioritised in areas with high accident numbers. There have been three recorded personal injury incidents over the full length of Mount Road in the past five years but there are other roads with higher accident rates.

“We can’t meet the many requests we get for traffic calming measures though we can assure the residents of Kirklees that we are doing everything we can to make the roads safer.”
