The burning wreckage set fire to two surrounding buildings as well as a number of cars situated on the road below - Wandsworth Road, South Lambeth.

A person on the ground was killed as a result of the accident, along with the pilot – Captain Pete Barnes from the charter firm Rotormotion.

Bad weather had caused the pilot to ask for a divertion to a nearby heliport.

Among the injured, seven were treated at the scene while five needed to be transferred to hospital with minor injuries.

The incident caused rush hour mayhem in London with a gridlock in Vauxhall Cross and the local railway and tube stations closed as a result.

More than 50 firefighters were called out to secure the crane after the damage.

Head of the Air Accidents Investigation Branch investigating the crash, Julian Firth, says it will be several months before a full report on the incident has been produced.
