Accidents following Heavy Lifting

Heavy lifting plays a large part in many people’s lives.  Be they nurses, firemen or drivers, there are many work activities which require a degree of heavy lifting.  Unfortunately this means the risk of having an accident as a result of heavy lifting is very high.  Heavy lifting and manual handling is a major cause of workplace injuries in the UK, and every year there are almost 3,500 injuries resulting from heavy lifting.

What type of accident occurs from heavy lifting?

Back injuries are the most common type of injury.  Chronic back injury from a slipped disc or bent spine can lead to permanent, lifelong pain and a bad injury can mean an earlier retirement than expected.  If this happens you will be severely out of pocket and will need to provide for your family and yourself even if you are out of work and have incurred large medical fees.

Other injuries can cause as much or more discomfort.  Cuts, muscle and tendon damage, broken limbs or ribs and even heart problems can be caused by heavy lifting.

Why can I claim financial compensation for an accident caused by heavy lifting?

Your employer has a duty of care to employees and must ensure you are safe.  Your employer has a duty to make risk assessments and to make sure you have adequate training to do any manual tasks, including lifting.

They also have a duty to maintain a safe environment at work, and this includes assisting employees in avoiding injury.  If an employee needs to do heavy lifting then he should be provided with any tools, equipment or training to reduce the risk of injury.

If therefore you have an accident as a result of heavy lifting in the workplace and the accident was not your fault then you may have a claim for compensation against your employer.  If you feel that reasonable precautions against injury were not made by the employer you may have good grounds for a claim.

How much financial compensation can I claim for an accident resulting from heavy lifting?

This may depend on the severity of the injury and the amount of expenses you have incurred.  A serious back injury, for example, can result in a large compensation payout if it means you cannot work again.  Our work injury solicitors specialise in accidents resulting from heavy lifting and can assist you in getting the compensation you deserve.  All you need to do is call us and in your free initial consultation we can advise you whether you can claim compensation for your injury and how much you can get.
