Caretaker injury sees Bradford Council fined

A schooltaker fell through a ceiling just days before retirement, leading to Bradford Council receiving a fine for a breach of health and safety.

While fitting a light bulb of an old school hall, David O’Hanlon, 62, fell four metres and was left with permanent disabilities including a fractured hip which might not gain full mobility.

Bradford Magistrates’ Court fined the council £15,000 admitting a breach in safety which has led to the man’s injuries.

O’Hanlon suffered a broken heel and fractured hip and will likely need a hip replacement after the fall. In turn these injuries could also lead to the development of arthritis and other long term health problems.

The council has been ordered to pay £5,667 in costs to Mr O’Hanlon after pleading guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act, but the HSE believes more care needs to be taken as this accident was completely avoidable.

“This incident was completely avoidable and has essentially dashed Mr O’Hanlon’s hopes and expectations for a healthy retirement,” he said.

Injuries in the workplace
