Unfortunately, as with any type of surgery there is always a risk involved and when it comes to breast surgery, this is no different. The breast implant process can be tricky as it involves a number of serious incisions close to very important parts of the body, any problems during this procedure or any faults with the implants themselves can lead to serious infection which could result in a major injury.

If you have been injured in this way through the fault of a negligent doctor or you have been given a faulty breast implant, then you could be eligible to make a claim for compensation.

How do breast implants work?

When it comes to breast enlargement surgery, the process involves making small incisions around the breast tissue, usually underneath to help shield the scarring, and inserting an implant which helps to stretch the skin around the breast area and therefore give an enlarged appearance. In most situations these implants are made from silicone, saline and composite, each of which can be dangerous if they are to leak or rupture, spreading to surrounding tissue.

What could go wrong with my breast implants?

When it comes to faulty breast implants there are a number of things that could go wrong, and some situations where you may be eligible to make a claim include:

  • Rupturing – the breast implant may rupture once placed within the body
  • Leakage – the breast implant could leak into surrounding tissue
  • Scarring – you could be left with very severe scarring after the operation
  • Infection – a faulty breast implant could lead to a serious infection of the surrounding tissue.

Who could I claim against?

When it comes to making a claim for a faulty breast implant, you will generally claim against either one of two people. If the implant was faulty to start off with then you could be eligible to make a claim against the manufacturer for providing you with a faulty product. If it was damaged as the result of negligent surgery then your claim will be against the operating surgeon.
