Compensation for a child bitten by a dog

Animals and pets are an incredibly large part of our lives, especially in the life of a child and developing a love of animals and interaction with them is often an important of growing up. Having a pet is something that many children aspire to and providing them with such an animal can often help them to develop responsibility and various life skills from a very early age.

Although in general pets are well-behaved around humans, not everyone trains their pet correctly, and in this case some pets can actually physically attack a human. If your child has been attacked by a dog who has not been properly restrained or trained by its owner, and they have been left with injuries as a result, you could be eligible to make a claim against the owner or carer of that dog for negligence.

What injuries could my child suffer from as a result of a dog bite?

Depending on the size of the dog, a bite can leave your child with either a minor or major injury, or in some situations if the child is small it can even lead to death. Some common injuries that you may consider making a claim for include:

  • Deep cuts, abrasions and potential scarring from a bite
  • Potential infections
  • Potential loss of limbs or fractured bones
  • Head and neck injuries from a fall or trip caused by a dog attack.

Who could I consider a claim against if my child is bitten by a dog?

If your child has been bitten by a dog then the first person who you may consider making a compensation claim against is the owner of the dog. As a pet owner, they have a responsibility to ensure that their pet is well-trained and restrained at all times. If the pet is kept at home it must be kept within the house or backyard area and not allowed to roam freely around, the same applies if the dog is being taken for a walk.

If the owner of the dog fails to do this and their dog attacks and injures your child, then you could be eligible to make a compensation claim.
