Compensation for an accident as a contractor

If you are working on a building site, or in a workplace but you aren't under a full time contract then chances are you are currently working as a contractor. Many people believe that the benefits and regulations around employees only refer to full-time staff members, but when it comes to safety this is simply not the case and even as a contractor you are entitled to receive the highest level of safety  standards within the workplace from anyone that you work for.

If you feel that you have been neglected as a contractor and that you haven't been subjected to the best possible safety on a worksite, you could be eligible to make a claim for any injuries that you have sustained as a result.

What is a contractor?

A contractor is generally a person who works for another company on a construction project. Contractors are usually not full-time staff members as they generally move from project to project and are therefore only required for a short period of time. The benefit of being a contractor is that your pay rates are generally good as you are paid per project and not on a fixed salary. The main downfall of being a contractor is that you generally have to continually find work, always with the potential that the work might not be there.

Where might I look to make a claim for compensation?

As a contractor there are situations where you could find yourself in need of a compensation claim, some common examples of this include:

  • Claims for a lack of safety procedures on a worksite
  • Claims for the negligence of other contractors
  • Claims for a lack of safety equipment
  • Claims for a lack of appropriate safety training
  • Claims for falls, trips and slips on a worksite.
