Compensation for injuries caused by a failure to maintain workplace machinery

Whether you work in an office, on a building site, in a shop or a factory, chances are that at some point during your daily routine you will use machinery of some kind.  Technological advances over the last century have vastly improved people’s quality of life, and many tasks which were once time-consuming can now be completed in a fraction of the time.

Whilst the increasing reliance on technology does of course have many benefits, working with machinery is not without its pitfalls, and if the machinery you work with is not maintained properly, or is poorly installed, then there is a considerable risk that you could be injured carrying out your work.

What types of machinery can result in an injury?

Machinery doesn’t just mean heavy machinery, but can be any type of equipment or tools which you use in your job, including:

·         Power tools, cement mixers and diggers on a building site

·         Packing machines, cutters, fork-lift trucks and other machinery in a factory

·         Ovens, microwaves, toasters and other appliances in a commercial kitchen

·         Computers, printers, and photocopiers in an office

Where could negligence occur in this situation?

If the machinery you work with is faulty or badly maintained, or you have not been provided with adequate safety training and safety equipment, then you could be entitled to claim compensation should you be involved in an accident.  If you can prove that your injury has been caused as a result of someone else’s negligence then you could be entitled to claim against them.
