Compensation for Pleural Plaques

When it comes to workplace injury compensation there are a number of different injury types that we deal with, in general many relate to specific recent injuries that are easy to identify, such as a broken limb or an illness which is directly affected to the workplace. Another type of injury that we can also deal with is a more long-term illness which can develop many years, even decades after exposure to a dangerous element in the workplace, and pleural plaques are an example of this.

As with any asbestos related disease, pleural plaques can take several years before they start to present a health risk to the user. In fact in this case it can take up to 20 years before any real symptoms start to show, after which time you may have left your job or retired. Even if you no longer work for your employer, you may still be eligible to make a compensation claim if your injuries were caused by their negligence.

How can Pleural Plaques affect me?

When it comes to pleural plaques they are one disease which are nearly always formed as the result of asbestos exposure. Unlike a more dangerous, cancerous form of mesothelioma, pleural plaques do not require a high level of exposure to develop, rather they are able to easily develop from low-dose, intermittent exposure to asbestos and therefore are far more common. Pleural plaques form as a level of scarring on the surface of the lung and have no real symptoms except for a shortness of breath. They are not lethal nor do they generally give the user a great deal of pain, but they can be the sign of a far more serious asbestos-related illness.

Who could I be eligible to claim against?

When it comes to making a compensation claim for pleural plaques, your claim will usually be directed towards your employer or previous employer if you don’t feel that they have given you adequate protection against asbestos within your workplace. It is the responsibility of your employer to ensure that you are provided with a safe working environment and any safety equipment that you might need, if you feel that they haven’t done this and you have been injured as a result you could make a claim.
