Compensation for Pressure Sores

Often unnoticed or dismissed as a relatively small abrasion or injury, pressure sores are one type of injury that can be hard to diagnose and therefore isn’t frequently considered during personal injury claims. Generally caused by an extended period of immobility, if you have been neglected by a carer or by hospital staff, then you could find yourself quickly developing this type of injury.

Pressure sores can be incredibly painful and they can lead to critical muscle and fat deterioration under the surface of the skin. If you have suffered from this, then you could be eligible to make a compensation claim.

What is a Pressure Sore?

A pressure sore generally refers to an area of the body which becomes sore and tender as the result of a long period of immobility where the skin has become trapped to a point where it cuts off the blood supply to that area of the body. Although often unnoticed, pressure sores can develop into something far more serious if they are left untreated and they can be incredibly painful to anyone who happens to develop one.

In the first few days most pressure sores generally go unnoticed as they appear as no more than a tender or red area of skin, but if this is untreated it can quickly become infected, especially if an open sore develops. If the sores develop further then they can cause damage to the fat cells and muscle layers in the surrounding areas leading to even more health problems.

Who can I claim against?

Pressure sores can develop for a number of reasons, but one of the main causes is when a person is left immobile for an extended period of time, this can occur in a care home or even a hospital if there is negligence involved. If you have sustained a pressure sore as a result of negligence on behalf of your carer, or during a stay in hospital where you have not been correctly looked after, then you could consider making a claim against the person who was responsible for your health.
