Compensation for Thumb Injury

When it comes to performing a number of daily tasks one thing that we often fail to recognise is the importance of our thumbs. When we carry, push, pull or work with items, or even if we are typing an email they are an incredibly important part of our lives and as such we generally need them to ensure that our hands continue to remain functional and we are able to complete a range of daily tasks with ease.

Unfortunately because we use our thumbs so frequently there is always the risk that they can become injured as a result either through repetitive use or through physical injuries such as lacerations, but if you receive an injury like this through no fault of your own and it leaves you unable to perform a range of daily tasks, you could be eligible to make a claim for compensation.

How does my Thumb work?

Our thumbs are relatively simple devices and work through messages which are communicated to them through our brains. They are connected to our bodies through our hands and a serious of muscle and bone connections with our wrist. As a part of our hands, one of the main responsibilities of our thumbs is to give us grip which allows us to hold, push and pull items as needed. Without this grip it becomes difficult to perform a range of daily tasks, including driving.

How could my Thumb be injured?

There are a number of different situations in which your thumb could be injured and some of the common claims that we deal with include:

  • Production line – if you are working on the production line then your thumb could become trapped in machinery if you have not been taught how to use it correctly or if the wrong setting is used by a negligent member of staff
  • Typing – repetitive typing can lead to problems with the thumb including carpal tunnel syndrome. This can be incredibly painful and lead to serious nerve damage, rendering you unable to use part of your hand
  • Sports injuries – collisions and ball sports can contribute to thumb injuries
  • Car accidents – your thumb can easily become trapped in or around the steering wheel as the result of a motor vehicle accident.

Who could I claim against?

When it comes to making a compensation claim there are many people who you could look at making a claim against and this includes your employer or another member of your workplace if you feel that your injury is as the result of workplace negligence. You could also claim against another member of the public if your injury is due to a sporting accident or car accident.
