New research shows PIP implants are potentially more widespread

In addition to the thousands of women who have received the faulty PIP implants since 2001, it is now thought than an additional 7000 women may have received these implants before 2001, and may now need to have them removed.

These new figures takes the number of women in Britain who have received the faulty implants to 47,000.

In January, it was decided that the women could have the implants removed for free on the NHS, despite many of them being administered by private clinics.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has supported this move, citing that these women have been the victim of a criminal activity.

“These women are the victims of a fraudulent company and I know this situation is causing a huge amount of anxiety,” he said.

“I want to reassure those affected by the news today that they will be provided with all the help they need from the NHS.

“Our commitment is to ensure support for all women from the NHS if needed; we will continue to press for the same standard of care or redress from private providers.”

The UK has joined the French, Czech and German governments in advising that anyone with PIP implants have them removed to avoid any health complications.

Can I make a claim for PIP implants?

If you have received PIP implants through no fault or knowledge of your own then you could be eligible to make a compensation claim. If your surgeon has administered PIP implants then they have been negligent towards your health and you could make a claim for negligence. This claim could cover the cost of removal and replacement, in addition to any medical costs that you incur through injuries that you may have sustained through the rupturing of the implants.

In addition, you could claim for pain and suffering if you have suffered psychological damage as a result of your experience.
