New study labels helmets “useless” in major bike accidents

Dr Carwyn Hooper from St George’s University of London believes new research suggest that wearing protective headgear is useless should a serious cycling accident occur.

“Looking at evidence, it does not matter if people are wearing a helmet or not, any serious accident on a bike is likely to kill them,” he said.

In Australia 80% of cyclists are wearing a helmet when they die in a cycling accident. Wearing a helmet while cycling is currently compulsory within Australia.

Dr Hooper believes that adults should be able to choose whether or not they want to wear a helmet, but adds that children are far more likely to benefit from wearing a helmet as in general their tumbles and falls are less serious.

Dr Hooper’s team was conducting research in regards to the recent introduction of compulsory cycling helmets in Northern Ireland.

Where could I claim for a bicycle accident?

Cycling is becoming an increasingly popular option for people who are looking to keep fit and remain environmentally conscious. Many people choose to cycle for leisure, but in some situations people take this more seriously and cycle to work and many other popular locations on a regular basis. As bicycles tend to share the road with much larger vehicles such as cars, HGVs and public transport, any accident which involves a cycle can have devastating consequences for the rider, but this doesn’t mean that you should be left out of pocket.

If you have been injured as a cyclist through the negligence of another road user then you could be eligible to make a claim for compensation. This claim could cover any medical expenses that you incur in addition to any additional rehabilitation, surgery or psychological trauma that you have been through as a result of your accident.
