In the summer of 2008, sofa buyers were in for a rather unpleasant surprise. An anti-mould chemical had been applied to a wide range of sofas imported from China, great to keep the mould at bay but not a very human-friendly chemical. The chemical gave a bad reaction to anyone who sat on the sofa, resulting in some serious rashes and burns.

What was Sofa Burn?

Sofa Burn was the result of harsh chemicals coming into contact with and causing damage to the skin of anyone who sat on the affected sofas. Dimethyl Fumarate (DMF) was one of the main chemicals used in the process and was one of the most damaging to human skin often results in bad outbreaks of eczema.

Famous high street retailers were affected including Argos and Land of Leather, who retailed the Chinese leather sofas at the time. As many of these sofas are also currently on the second hand market, many of the claims are on-going, to date, claims for Sofa Burn have been among some of the largest claims to UK retailers in history.

What were the effects of Sofa Burn?

Sofa burn had a range of effects on purchasers including:

  • Rashes – The main symptom of Sofa Burn was a series of rashes that would appear on the skin. This was a result of the skin’s reaction with the chemicals on the sofa
  • Burns – Basic burns were received by many people who sat on the sofas that had been subjected to the chemical sprays
  • Eczema – Mainly caused by DMF, eczema is a skin condition that consists of red rashes, painful swelling and itchy skin
  • Blistering – Blistering was caused in some cases from the chemical burns.
