Thankfully most injuries are not so serious, but even a slight injury can have a massive impact on someone’s life.  Minor injuries range from broken bones to sprains and cuts. Whiplash is one of the most common injuries sustained in car accidents, and occurs when the impact of a crash forces the head violently forwards and backwards, resulting in injury to the neck and spine.  In many cases the injury is not felt for a couple of days after the accident.  You may need to take time off of work to cope with the pain, or incur medical fees for physiotherapy sessions.  Whiplash can prevent you from sleeping and makes it difficult to do day-to-day tasks, such as working at a computer or performing household chores.

Can I claim financial compensation for an injury such as whiplash sustained in a car accident?

If you have suffered as a result of a car accident which was not your fault you have a right to claim for any loss suffered and for the inconvenience to your life.  All drivers in the UK are obliged to take out car insurance cover so in the event of an accident you can claim against the insurer.  If the driver is uninsured or untraceable then the Motor Insurers Bureau is designed to provide cover for anyone injured.

What should I do if I suffer a car accident?

  • If anyone is injured, call an ambulance or take them to a hospital.
  • If you are injured, make sure you seek medical attention as soon as you can.  Often you may suspect an injury is minor, but without medical assistance it may grow into a long term problem which could affect your day-to-day life.
  • Take photographs of the incident, including the car and the accident scene.
  • Ensure you keep any receipts relating to the accident, for example receipts relating to medical fees or taxis.
  • Speak to any witnesses and obtain their contact details.  Their witness statements may come in useful later.
