Three-hour ambulance wait for 86-year-old Norwich woman

After breaking her leg on the pavement outside her home in Thorpe St Andrew, an 86-year-old Norwich woman had to wait three hours for an ambulance to arrive.

A friend (who telephoned 999 after the accident happened) called the local ambulance service to be told that an ambulance was on its way, but the ambulance didn’t arrive until nearly three hours later.

According to the East of England Ambulance Service (EEAS), crews in the area had been delayed at the hospital and therefore it took an extended period of time to reach the victim.

“It was an emergency. An elderly person exposed in the gutter on a public road. I thought [the wait] was scandalous,” said friend Jim Tate who was with her at the time.

“Every now and then you heard an ambulance disappear in the distance and every time I thought ‘oh, that’s coming’, then it disappeared,” said Mrs Shaw from her hospital bed.

In response to the incident an EEAS spokesperson said “We do our best to get to patients within the necessary time frame, but a number of our crews were diverted away from the incident because of more life-threatening incidents occurring.”

Claims for medical negligence

Although paramedics, GPs and other healthcare professionals do their very best to ensure that we are brought back to health in next to no time, there is always the potential for accidents to happen and if you do happen to be the victim then you can often be left with quite serious injuries which may require further treatment.

If you feel that you have been the victim of medical negligence then you could look to make a compensation claim to cover any potential costs that you have incurred which might include medical expenses, bills and any associated fees.
