History of the M61

Opened in the winter of 1968 (28th of November) the M61 was the result of a successful and major road planning exercise. Some 49 bridges needed to be constructed and even back in those days the environment was a consideration, as 300,000 tons of burnt colliery shale was used to cap open mine shafts. The planners for the M61 motorway were ahead of their time taking more than just the traffic into account. In terms of civil engineering this truly was a fantastic feat.
